Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Protection
From maker's figures 8/10What it removes from water, and how well that is proved. 8: Clearly better than most.
Two stages: a 0.2 µm membrane microfilter and a carbon filter. LifeStraw says the membrane meets US EPA and NSF P231 for bacteria and parasites (99.999999% and 99.999%): a named standard for bacteria and protozoa, so 4. The carbon stage (NSF 42, chlorine) adds nothing to the microbe score. No virus claim.
Flow rate
Estimate from maker's specs: filter type (no flow rate published) 3/10How fast clean water comes through when it is new. Real flow drops as it clogs: see Ease of use. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much it adds to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
268 g for the bottle and filters (LifeStraw). Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 272 g. Both are 150 to 299 g.
Ease of use
Estimate from maker's specs: filter type 7/10Filling, squeezing or pumping effort, how fast it clogs in peaty or silty water, and how easy it is to clean. 7: Better than most.

In short
Good for
- Travel and everyday use where you want filtered water in one bottle
- Day walks where streams are frequent
- Taste: the carbon stage reduces chlorine and odours
Strengths
- Bottle, membrane filter and carbon filter in one
- Membrane rated to 4,000 L
- Meets NSF P231 for bacteria and parasites (LifeStraw)
- Both filters are replaceable
Weaknesses
- 268 g, much heavier than a squeeze filter
- Carbon filter is rated to only 100 L, about two months
- You suck water through the filters, which takes some pull (CleverHiker)
- Does not remove viruses
- Not safe after freezing: LifeStraw's manual says never let the membrane filter freeze after use, and replace it if it does
- Only one independent test of this bottle, and its spec box and text disagree on the size (650 ml and 1 L)
