Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 10/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Ledlenser gives 1,000 lumens in the Standard Power mode (3 hours), and its UK FAQ says it measures its lights to ANSI/FL1 (the product page doesn't repeat it): the 800+ band. The 2,000-lumen boost is described as a short burst and is not counted.

Runtime

From maker's figures 8/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 8: Clearly better than most.

The 250-lumen Mid Power mode runs 8 hours on the 4600 mAh battery (Ledlenser's figure), in the 6–9.9 h band. The 1,000-lumen mode lasts 3 hours; the 20-lumen low mode runs 100 hours but is under 80 lumens, so it doesn't count.

Weight

From maker's figures 1/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 1: A real weak point.

Ledlenser lists 283 g including the battery, in the 150 g and over band (Knives and Tools gives 285 g).

In short

Good for

  • Mountain users who want a very bright, adjustable lamp and accept 283 g on the head
  • Finding the way on dark mountains: 240 m beam in the 1,000-lumen mode (Ledlenser's figure)
  • Camp use that needs red, green or blue light as well as white

Strengths

  • 250 lumens for 8 hours and 1,000 lumens for 3 hours (Ledlenser's figures)
  • Automatic Adaptive Light Beam plus a manual digital focus ring from flood to spot
  • Red, green and blue light modes, and an optional red rear light
  • IP67 water rating and a 1.5 m drop test on a 283 g lamp
  • 4600 mAh rechargeable battery in a rear pack with an over-head strap; it keeps working while it charges over USB-C; 7-year warranty with online registration

Weaknesses

  • 283 g with the battery, a heavy head torch
  • The 2,000-lumen boost is a short burst: 1,000 lumens lasts 3 hours
  • Charge time is 240 minutes
  • The red rear light is an optional extra
