Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: thin liner glove 1/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 1: A real weak point.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much they add to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
Icebreaker gives 42 g for size L ('product weight' on its UK and US pages) and doesn't say whether that is the pair or one glove; its other glove pages (200 Oasis liners 27 g, 260 Quantum gloves 48 g) are worded the same way, so its pages don't settle it. Where the brand's own pages leave it open we band the one that scores lower: 42 g as one glove makes 84 g for the pair, the 60-109 g band, band 4 (7 out of 10). If 42 g were the pair, the weight would be 42 g and the band 5. Cotswold Outdoor's shop copy says 260 g, which is the fabric weight of the merino and isn't a glove weight. Hardloop's copy gives 49 g for size M, shop text only, for a listing with a different fingertip fabric.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 2/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 2: A weak point.
A merino liner. Icebreaker makes no windproof, water-repellent or waterproof claim: the 'no claim' band for liners.
In short
Good for
- A thin layer under a shell mitt or insulated glove on cold hill days
- Cool, dry days worn alone for walking or running
- Using a phone with gloves on: touchscreen thumb and index fingertips
- A warm spare layer for almost no pack weight
Strengths
- Light for a merino liner: Icebreaker lists 42 g for size L, taken as 84 g for the pair
- 260gm merino body: soft, warm and non-clammy
- Touchscreen-compatible thumb and index fingertips
- Machine washable (warm wash, line dry)
- Sizes XS to XL
Weaknesses
- No weather protection by design: a shell is needed in wind and rain
- One customer review reports holes in the index fingers and thumb after less than 15 days, and another says the XS fits like an S
- Thin for a 260gm merino glove: one shop reviewer expected something thicker and warmer
