Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 7: Better than most.
HydraPak UK lists 172 g for 1 L: 172 g per litre, in the 100–179 g/L band. HydraPak lists 172.4 g; Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 174 g, which gives the same band.
Packed size (empty)
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 4: A bit below average.
A rigid bottle does not shrink, so we draw it as a cylinder from its height and width, as for the reviewed Nalgene bottles. HydraPak gives 28 cm tall and 8 cm across: 3.1416 x 4 x 4 x 28 = 1,407 cm³, so 1.41 L empty for 1 L held, in the 1.3–1.79 band.
In short
Good for
- Day hikes and wild camps where one cheap, rigid 1 L bottle will do
- Pack side pockets and car cup holders: the 8 cm body is slimmer than a wide-mouth Nalgene (8.9 cm)
- Hikers who want less splash from the wide mouth and will add HydraPak's WaterGate splash protector
Strengths
- Tethered cap that cannot be dropped, with an angled handle for a carabiner or one hand
- Slender 8 cm body that fits most pack pockets and cup holders (HydraPak)
- Made from Tritan Renew with 50% recycled content; HydraPak says it resists impact, stains and odours
- Dishwasher safe (cap off); fits HydraPak's WaterGate splash protector
Weaknesses
- Rigid: takes 1.41 L of pack room whether full or empty
- Wide mouth, so it splashes unless you add the separate WaterGate protector (HydraPak sells it for this bottle)
- HydraPak gives a maximum temperature of 60 °C, so it is not for boiling water or as a hot-water bottle
- No independent test found, so ease of use and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
- Only 5 g lighter than the Nalgene Wide Mouth 1 L (177 g)
