Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 4: A bit below average.

Hilleberg's minimum weight of 2.0 kg (fly, inner and poles) is in the 2.0-2.69 kg band, right at the bottom of it. Complete with pegs and bags it is 2.3 kg. Heavy for a one-person tent.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Hilleberg's handbook gives Kerlon 1200 as 5,000 mm HH (ISO 811), in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the Red Label floor as 15,000 mm, so no point is taken off. Gran Fondo quotes lower figures, which don't match the handbook, so we use the handbook. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

From reviews 8/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 8: Clearly better than most.

All three reviewers rate it very strong for its weight. OutdoorGearLab says the freestanding dome gives strong protection from high wind and snow loading and scored its weather resistance 7 out of 10; Gran Fondo found it among the most dependable tents in its test in storms and strong winds; Eat Sleep Wild's tent did not budge in gusty rain on the Cairngorm plateau. Nobody reports a named gale.

Space

From maker's figures 10/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Hilleberg's 2.5 m² inner area for one person is in the 1.6 m²+ band (it is a one-berth tent, so the whole floor counts). Hilleberg says it holds one person and gear, or two in a pinch.

Packed size

From maker's figures 6/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.

Hilleberg's packed size is 46 x 14 cm: 3.1416 x 7 x 7 x 46 = 7,081 cm³, so 7.08 L, in the 7-9.9 L band. This is with the poles and pegs rolled inside.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Reviewers' average 9/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "This is one of the fastest tents to pitch ever.".

Condensation*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.

2 reviews on condensation, e.g. "Despite the somewhat limited ventilation, the tent showed no issues with condensation during our test.".

In short

Good for

  • One person who wants a freestanding tent for year-round use on exposed ground such as the Scottish plateaus
  • Pitching on rock, shingle or snow where pegs won't hold: it stands without them
  • Solo winter or shoulder-season trips where strength and room matter more than the last few hundred grams

Strengths

  • Freestanding dome that goes up in about 2 minutes, inner and fly together
  • Roomy for one: 2.5 m² inner with space to sit up and keep kit inside
  • Very waterproof: 5,000 mm fly and 15,000 mm floor
  • Unclipping one inner corner makes a small sheltered space for cooking or wet kit
  • Strong build: reviewers report no problems in storms and strong winds

Weaknesses

  • Heavy for a solo tent: 2.0 kg minimum, 2.3 kg complete
  • Almost no porch: wet kit and cooking need the unclipped-corner trick or go inside
  • One entrance, so two people sharing it get in each other's way
  • Limited ventilation, so it runs warm on summer days
  • Durability is an estimate, not a reviewed score: no reviewer reports more than short trips
