Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 6: A bit better than average.

Hilleberg's 2026/2027 handbook gives a minimum weight of 1.6 kg (fly, inner and poles only), in the 1.5-1.99 kg band; complete it is 1.8 kg. Tiso's page says 1.5 kg and older reviews say 1.65 to 1.78 kg, so the handbook figure is used. All of these are in the same band.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Hilleberg's handbook gives Kerlon 1000 as 5,000 mm HH (ISO 811), in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the Yellow Label floor as 15,000 mm, so no point is taken off. Older reviews (The Great Outdoors, Section Hiker) quote a 50D floor at 12,000 mm; the current handbook says 70D and 15,000 mm. Either floor figure is above 2,000 mm. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

From reviews 7/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 7: Better than most.

Reviewers disagree. The Great Outdoors (Chris Townsend) found it flexes a little in strong winds but is not noisy and feels secure. Section Hiker calls it a bomber, wind-worthy tent: sleeve poles hold better than clips, and it advises 8-10 pegs for maximum wind anchoring. Alex on the Mountain (video, 2023) pitched it side-on in a storm with gusts forecast up to about 100 km/h (he measured about 40 km/h at the time), said it wanted to blow away like a kite, double-pulled the poles, and then had water coming in at a zip and a seam in wind-driven rain; that is one tent in one storm. Scores 4, 5 and 2: average 3.7 out of 5, so 7 out of 10.

Reviewers disagree on this.

Space

From maker's figures 6/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.

Hilleberg gives 2.6 m² of inner floor for two people: 2.6 / 2 = 1.3 m² each, in the 1.15-1.34 band. The inner is 220 cm x 120 cm and 100 cm high. Hilleberg itself says the single door and lengthwise porch make it less comfortable for two than its other two-person tents: one person has to climb over the other to reach the door.

Packed size

From maker's figures 6/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.

Hilleberg's packed size is 46 x 14 cm: 3.1416 x 7 x 7 x 46 = 7,081 cm³, so 7.1 L, in the 7-9.9 L band. This is with the poles and pegs rolled inside; packing the tent and poles separately makes it smaller.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Reviewers' average 8/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

4 reviews on pitching, e.g. "It goes up as a unit and pitching is quick and easy.".

Condensation*

Reviewers' average 8/10

How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.

4 reviews on condensation, e.g. "I haven't had any internal condensation transfer from the outer fly to the inner tent on any of the trips I've taken with the Niak.".

Reviewers disagree on this.

In short

Good for

  • One person who wants a roomy, tough tent for UK three-season trips without the weight of a four-season tunnel
  • A parent and child, or one person and a dog
  • Mild-weather camping where you might meet a strong wind or heavy rain

Strengths

  • Strong for its weight: two sleeve poles, Kerlon 1000 fly, and a high, 70D bathtub floor
  • Quick and easy to pitch as one unit, or fly first
  • Very roomy for one person: 220 x 120 cm inner, with space for a pack, and a porch that takes wet gear and careful cooking
  • 5,000 mm fly and 15,000 mm floor, and a mesh inner door for ventilation
  • Light for a tent this strong: 1.6 kg minimum, 1.8 kg complete

Weaknesses

  • Single door and a single lengthwise porch: with two inside, one person has to climb over the other (Hilleberg and The Great Outdoors say so)
  • Yellow Label means snow-free use: the mesh inner door and raised fly mean snow could blow in
  • One tester had it move in gusts when pitched side-on to the wind, and water came in at a zip and seam in a storm (Alex on the Mountain, video, 2023)
  • Heavier than most solo tents at 1.6 kg minimum
  • Durability is an estimate, not a reviewed score: no source reports long-term wear
