Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 1/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 1: A real weak point.

Hilleberg's minimum weight of 3.1 kg (fly, inner and poles) is in the 2.7 kg+ band. Complete with pegs and bags it is 3.8 kg. Two people sharing carry about 1.6 to 1.9 kg each.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Hilleberg's handbook gives Kerlon 1800 as 5,500 mm HH (ISO 811), in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the Black Label floor as 20,000 mm, so no point is taken off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

Estimate: only 2 reviews about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 8: Clearly better than most.

Not enough evidence: only two reviews cover the GT itself. The Great Outdoors expected a tunnel to be worse than a geodesic dome but found it stood up well with plenty of guylines; Alpinist used it in whipping gusts at about 3,750 m on a ski tour. Reviews of the standard Nammatj 2 are not counted, because the GT has a different porch and pole set.

Space

From maker's figures 7/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.

Hilleberg's 2.8 m² inner area for two people is 1.4 m² each, in the 1.35-1.59 m² band. The inner is 220 cm long and 95 cm high, and the extended porch adds 2.4 m².

Packed size

From maker's figures 3/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Hilleberg's packed size is 51 x 18 cm: 3.1416 x 9 x 9 x 51 = 12,978 cm³, so 12.98 L, in the 10-14.9 L band. This is with the poles and pegs rolled inside.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about pitching (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

2 reviews on pitching, e.g. "the pole system is super smooth and easy compared to all the other tents".

Reviewers disagree on this.

Condensation*

Estimate: only 1 review about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.

1 review on condensation, e.g. "the condensation on the interior of the tent was virtually not an issue in June,".

Durability*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How well the fabric, poles, zips and seams hold up over seasons of use.

2 reviews on durability, e.g. "You can see and feel the quality with a Hilleberg tent and I reckon it will last the test of time.".

In short

Good for

  • Two people who want a strong tunnel tent with a big porch for cooking and kit in winter or stormy weather
  • Multi-day trips or base camps where you live in the tent and need space for boots, stoves and packs
  • Snow camps: the fabric and pegging points are built to be weighted with snow

Strengths

  • Big 2.4 m² porch, large enough to cook in and store packs, plus a roomy 2.8 m² inner
  • Very waterproof: 5,500 mm fly and 20,000 mm floor
  • Strong for 3.1 kg: The Great Outdoors and Alpinist found it stood up well to wind and gusts when guyed out
  • The fly pitches first and the inner can stay attached, so the inner stays dry in rain
  • Comes with 18 Y-pegs for pegging out in soft ground or snow

Weaknesses

  • Heavy and bulky: 3.1 kg minimum, 3.8 kg complete, 12.98 L packed
  • Not freestanding: it needs good pegging and guylines and a flat enough pitch
  • One door and one porch, so one person climbs past the other to get out
  • Two reviewers want more inner pockets
  • Poles can be hard to push into the sleeves in wind, and the underside straps tangle if packed carelessly
  • Wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: only two reviews cover the GT itself
