Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 4: A bit below average.
Hilleberg's minimum weight is 2.0 kg (fly, inner and poles only), in the 2.0-2.69 kg band. Complete with pegs and bags it is 2.4 kg. Two people sharing carry about 1.0 to 1.2 kg each.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Hilleberg's handbook gives Kerlon 1200 (the Nallo's fly) as 5,000 mm HH (ISO 811), in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the floor as 15,000 mm, so no point is taken off. Some reviews and shop pages say 10,000 mm for the fly; the maker's own 2026/2027 handbook says 5,000 mm, so we use that. Either figure gives a 5. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
From reviews 8/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 8: Clearly better than most.
Most reviewers rate it very strong in wind, as long as it is pitched end-on to the wind and pegged and guyed out properly. Live for the Outdoors held firm on a windy, wet Scottish hillside in February and called it rock solid; Walkhighlands found the Nallo 2 GT stable in high winds unless pitched side-on; Wilderness found it reassuring in a windy night on the tops. Two sources give it a 3: the 2015 Treeline Backpacker review of the older design found it strong but buffeted and noisy in side winds, and WildCamping.Life says it handles powerful winds but untested in snow. Sidewalls sag when wet and need re-tensioning. Evidence supports 4, not 5.
Reviewers disagree on this.
Space
From maker's figures 6/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.
Hilleberg gives 2.6 m² inner area for two people: 2.6 / 2 = 1.3 m² each, in the 1.15-1.34 band. Inner height is 100 cm and the inner is about 220 cm long (Live for the Outdoors and shop listings; the handbook gives the figure only in a diagram, so it isn't used).
Packed size
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.
Hilleberg's packed size is 48 x 17 cm: 3.1416 x 8.5 x 8.5 x 48 = 10,895 cm³, so 10.9 L, in the 10-14.9 L band. This is with the poles and pegs rolled inside; packing the tent and poles separately makes it smaller.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "It pitches easily, either all in one or outer first.".
Condensation*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 7/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
2 reviews on condensation, e.g. "a certain amount of condensation is almost unavoidable in a tunnel tent. Still, it's perfectly manageable and rarely causes any real issues.".
In short
Good for
- Winter and shoulder-season camps on UK hills, where you want a tent that stays up in strong wind and rain
- Two people (or one person who wants lots of room) who will use it all year for many years
- People who want a tent that can be pitched outer-first, so the inner stays dry in rain or snow
Strengths
- Maker-rated for all-season use (Red Label), with the fly going all the way to the ground and high vents that stay clear in snow
- Very strong in wind when pitched end-on and guyed out, in several independent reviews
- Very waterproof: 5,000 mm fly and 15,000 mm floor
- Quick to pitch, with the inner and outer together or the outer first
- Big vestibule (1.3 m²) for gear and cooking, and 2.4 kg complete is light for a tent this strong
Weaknesses
- Single door and single vestibule, so access is awkward for two people
- Not freestanding: it needs good pegging, and pitching side-on to the wind is a problem
- Sidewalls sag in wet or cold weather and need re-tensioning
- Heavy and bulky to carry solo: 2.0 kg minimum and 10.9 L packed
- Hilleberg doesn't use the "4-season" label: it rates the Nallo Red Label "All season use", which we treat as its 4-season rating. It is the lighter Red Label build (9 mm poles, lighter zips), not the stronger Black Label Nammatj
- Durability is an estimate, not a reviewed score: only one reviewer reports long-term wear
