Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 6: A bit better than average.

Hilleberg's minimum weight is 1.5 kg (fly, inner and poles only), in the 1.5-1.99 kg band, just on the edge. Complete with pegs and bags it is 1.8 kg. Two people sharing carry about 0.75 to 0.9 kg each.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Hilleberg's handbook gives Kerlon 1000 (the Anjan's fly) as 5,000 mm HH (ISO 811), in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the Yellow Label floor as 15,000 mm, so no point is taken off. Reviews from before the current floor describe a 50D, 12,000 mm floor; either is above 2,000 mm. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

From reviews 9/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Three sources rate it well in wind. Section Hiker: sleeve poles (not clips) limit flapping in high wind and extra guylines anchor it. Backpackers.com pitched it on rocky ground in strong gusts and never worried it would blow away; it is quiet because the tunnel shape does not whip. FreedivejeepHD (video, 2020, about 75 nights) says it sheds wind well when pitched head or tail to the wind, but is not nearly as strong side-on. Scores 4, 5 and 4.

Space

From maker's figures 6/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.

Hilleberg gives 2.6 m² of inner floor for two people: 2.6 / 2 = 1.3 m² each, in the 1.15-1.34 band. The inner is 220 cm long and 100 cm high at the front, sloping to 80 cm at the back, with a 1.2 m² porch. Reviewers call it roomy for one and fine for two.

Packed size

From maker's figures 7/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 7: Better than most.

Hilleberg's packed size is 46 x 13 cm: 3.1416 x 6.5 x 6.5 x 46 = 6,106 cm³, so 6.1 L, in the 4-6.9 L band. This is with the poles and pegs rolled inside; packing the tent and poles separately makes it smaller.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Reviewers' average 7/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "there are a large number of variables that you may have to tweak when you pitch the tent to get a solid setup".

Reviewers disagree on this.

Condensation*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.

2 reviews on condensation, e.g. "I haven't had any internal condensation transfer from the outer fly to the inner tent on any of the trips I've taken.".

In short

Good for

  • Backpackers who want a strong, light-for-its-strength tunnel tent for UK spring to autumn trips
  • One person who wants a roomy tent with a big porch, or two people on a short trip
  • Long walks where the tent is pitched and struck every day

Strengths

  • Light for its strength: 1.5 kg minimum, 1.8 kg complete
  • Tunnel shape with sleeve poles: reviewers find it quiet and stable in strong wind when pitched end-on
  • 5,000 mm fly and 15,000 mm floor
  • Fly and inner pitch together, or fly first to keep the inner dry
  • Large porch (1.2 m²) and a mesh back panel and roll-up rear wall for ventilation

Weaknesses

  • Not freestanding: it needs at least 4 pegs, and firm ground makes the small Y pegs hard to push in (Trek & Mountain)
  • Weaker side-on to the wind than end-on (FreedivejeepHD)
  • Yellow Label means snow-free use: the inner door is mesh and the fly does not reach the ground
  • Single door that opens to the side of the porch, so getting out at night can wake the other person (Section Hiker)
  • Durability is an estimate, not a reviewed score: every review describes the earlier, thinner floor
