Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 7: Better than most.
Hilleberg's minimum weight is 1.4 kg (outer, inner, pegs and bags; the trekking poles that hold it up are not included), in the 1.0-1.49 kg band. Add your own poles if you don't already hike with them.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Outer tent Kerlon 1000 is 5,000 mm HH (3,000 mm+ band) and the floor is 15,000 mm in Hilleberg's fabric table, so no points are taken off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
From reviews 7/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 7: Better than most.
Reviewers found it more stable than most three-season tents, but not a storm tent: Chris Townsend says it stands up to strong winds surprisingly well but is not for big storms on tops, Trek & Mountain warns it isn't built for very cold or windy conditions, and K9 Outdoors says it took 48 to 56 km/h pitched low and pegged hard (with more condensation).
Space
From maker's figures 6/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.
Hilleberg's 2.6 m² inner area ÷ 2 people = 1.3 m² each, in the 1.15-1.34 band. The inner is 220 cm long (from the drawing in Hilleberg's handbook) and 105 cm high. Reviewers still call it roomy for two (mats side by side with room for packs).
Packed size
From maker's figures 8/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 8: Clearly better than most.
Packs to 43 cm long x 11 cm across: 3.1416 x 5.5 x 5.5 x 43 = 4,086 cm³, so 4.09 L, in the 4-6.9 L band. Hilleberg says it can be squashed smaller.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Condensation*
Reviewers' average 8/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
4 reviews on condensation, e.g. "I never find my head or feet brushing against them or picking up condensation.".
Reviewers disagree on this.

In short
Good for
- Solo or two-person summer and shoulder-season hill camps where you already hike with trekking poles
- Wild campers who want a light tent with a lot of floor and storage room (two doors, two 0.9 m² porches)
- Hot or midgy nights, where the airy outer and mesh inner help and the doors roll right away
- Anyone who wants the outer on its own as a 640 g tarp on dry trips
Strengths
- 1.4 kg for a two-person double-skin tent with two porches, but the trekking poles are extra
- Kerlon 1000 outer is 5,000 mm HH with a 15,000 mm floor, so it ranks near the top for rain protection
- Roomy and airy: reviewers fit two mats side by side with space for packs, and each person has their own door and porch
- Outer and inner pitch together but can be used separately, and the outer alone weighs 640 g
- Packs to 4.09 L (43 x 11 cm)
- Hilleberg build quality: reinforced pole sleeves, sturdy zips and tensioners
Weaknesses
- Needs trekking poles (125-135 cm) and 12 pegs; the supplied pegs are short for soft ground (K9 Outdoors)
- Three-season design, not for snow or very windy tops: Trek & Mountain and Chris Townsend both say so
- Only a single zip on each inner door, which can't be opened from the top, so midges get in while you open it (K9 Outdoors, Chris Townsend)
- Outer doesn't reach the ground: this gives good airflow, but pitching low for a storm raises condensation (K9 Outdoors)
