Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 2/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 2: A weak point.
Hilleberg's minimum weight is 2.8 kg (3.3 kg packed with pegs and bags), in the 2.7 kg+ band. Two people sharing carry about 1.4 to 1.65 kg each.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Hilleberg's handbook gives Kerlon 1200 as 5,000 mm HH (ISO 811), in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the Red Label floor as 15,000 mm, so no point comes off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
From reviews 9/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Reviewers rate it very strong: The Great Outdoors called it the most stormproof tent it tested, Callum James found it exceptional in high winds and heavy rain, Switchback Travel felt confident in heavy winds and snow, and Peak and Paddle's owner got through a night above 80 km/h unscathed, though the fly was noisy and the night largely sleepless.
Space
From maker's figures 7/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.
Hilleberg's 2.8 m² inner area ÷ 2 people = 1.4 m² each, in the 1.35-1.59 band. Inner height is 105 cm and the inner is 225 cm long and 120 to 130 cm wide.
Packed size
From maker's figures 3/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Packs to 51 cm long x 18 cm across: 3.1416 x 9 x 9 x 51 = 12,978 cm³, so 12.98 L, in the 10-14.9 L band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 9/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
5 reviews on pitching, e.g. "The Allak is perhaps the single easiest tent we've ever set up.".
Condensation*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
2 reviews on condensation, e.g. "Despite use in inclement weather, we have had absolutely no condensation on the Allak's inner walls.".
In short
Good for
- Winter and shoulder-season camps on UK hills where wind and snow are likely
- Year-round use by one or two people who want one tent for everything
- Sandy, rocky or frozen pitches, because it stands without pegs
Strengths
- Four-season dome that reviewers trust in storms, with a fly that reaches the ground
- Freestanding and pitches inner and outer together, so the inner stays dry in rain
- Kerlon 1200 fly (5,000 mm) and a 15,000 mm floor
- Two doors and two vestibules (0.8 m² each)
- Spare pole section and repair sleeve included, and the poles can be doubled up for extreme weather
Weaknesses
- Heavy and bulky: 2.8 kg minimum, 3.3 kg packed, 51 x 18 cm
- Basic pegs that The Great Outdoors called some of the least usable it tested
- More prone to condensation than many tents because the fly reaches the ground; leave the vents open
- Fly can be noisy in strong wind
