What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Sturdiness*
Reviewers' average 8/10How stiff and steady they stay under your weight.
3 reviews on sturdiness, e.g. "Hiking over the Wiltshire downs, these poles really came through, giving me the extra stability I needed on steep and slippery terrain.".
Locks*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about locks (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How well the locks hold without slipping or loosening.
2 reviews on locks, e.g. "We didn’t have any issues with the poles collapsing on us on any descents".
In short
Good for
- Walkers who want poles that fold to 35 cm for a day pack, a running vest or travel luggage
- Fast-and-light trips where 360 g a pair matters more than a cushioned strap
- Short to average height walkers: it adjusts from 109 to 120 cm (Needle Sports says it suits people under 179 cm)
Strengths
- 360 g a pair (180 g a piece, Helinox), 35 cm folded
- Shafts of DAC TH72M aluminium alloy, with Helinox's 5-year warranty on manufacturing defects
- Twist-lock top section gives 109-120 cm of adjustment, unusual on a folding pole
- Extended EVA foam grip, tungsten carbide tips and rubber tip covers included
Weaknesses
- Twist lock is fiddly with gloves (MyOutdoors, Live For The Outdoors); tension-only folding sections can spring apart in soft ground (Live For The Outdoors, TL130)
- Short for tall walkers: 120 cm at most (the TL130 goes to 130 cm)
- Thin strap with little padding (MyOutdoors) and a slim grip that suits smaller hands (Live For The Outdoors)
- Small fixed baskets sink in boggy ground (Live For The Outdoors, TL130)
- Durability score is blank: only one source reports wear. Lock and grip scores rest partly on a review of the longer TL130 Adjustable
