Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Protection
From maker's figures 10/10What it removes from water, and how well that is proved. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Bacteria, protozoa and viruses (99.99% of viruses, 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.9% of protozoan cysts) to the US EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for microbiological purifiers, tested by an independent lab (Grayl). A named standard for all three, so 5. Grayl says it holds no NSF or WQA certification. OutdoorGearLab also saw third-party SGS lab results that confirm more than 99.9% removal of each.
Flow rate
From maker's figures 10/10How fast clean water comes through when it is new. Real flow drops as it clogs: see Ease of use. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Grayl gives 8 seconds for 710 ml, about 5 L/min, new cartridge, clean water. 2.5 L/min or more. OutdoorGearLab timed about 4 L/min (15 seconds a bottle), slowing to 25 seconds in murky water. We Seek Travel found it takes around 8 seconds a press at first, longer after about 100 presses, and much harder to press in sediment-heavy glacial water.
Weight
From maker's figures 2/10How much it adds to your pack. 2: A weak point.
450 g empty (Grayl). 450 g or more. It is also the bottle you drink from, so you carry no other.
Ease of use
From reviews 8/10Filling, squeezing or pumping effort, how fast it clogs in peaty or silty water, and how easy it is to clean. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fill the outer cup, press the inner bottle down and drink in 8 to 15 seconds. OutdoorGearLab (4) found it simple but needing some muscle, and the cartridge hard to pull apart when wet. CleverHiker (4) liked the grips on the lid and side and found it easy to drink from. We Seek Travel (4) found it very intuitive and easy to press with clear water. Average 4 out of 5, so 8 out of 10. OutdoorGearLab's 10-point scores are halved and a half rounds down (9.0 becomes 4, 8.0 becomes 4, 7.0 becomes 3, 5.0 becomes 2), the same as on other Fellkit pages.
In short
Good for
- Travel where tap water is doubtful: it also removes viruses
- Trips with unknown or farmed water sources
- One bottle for tap, stream and carry on short hikes
Strengths
- Removes viruses as well as bacteria and protozoa, to the US EPA protocol (Grayl)
- 710 ml of purified water in about 8 to 15 seconds, no pumping
- One-way valve lets you add electrolytes or drink mix to the clean side
- Tough body: dropped on rocks with only scuffs (CleverHiker)
- Grayl says it can be used in freezing temperatures, with no more than 2 freeze and thaw cycles on a cartridge
Weaknesses
- 450 g and bulky for backpacking (OutdoorGearLab)
- Cartridge lasts only 250 L and slows fast in silty water
- Pressing takes some muscle and the parts must be separated to dry
- Grayl holds no NSF or WQA certification
- Grayl says to avoid using a cartridge after 3 or more freeze and thaw cycles
