Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Fire-Maple gives 630 g on both its UK and US pages, in the 450-649 g band. PaleoHikerMD's figure from the box (about 624 g) is in the same band.

Fuel use

Estimate from maker's specs: fuel type (no fuel use figure published) 5/10

How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Estimate from maker's specs

Boil speed (calm air)

From maker's figures 9/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Fire-Maple's UK page gives 1 min 42 s for 0.5 L, doubled to 204 s for 1 litre (scaled), under the 210 s line. This is a lab figure; reviewers' real boils were slower (see weaknesses), but we band Fire-Maple's figure.

In short

Good for

  • Walkers who want a 1 litre boil-in-the-pot system that also takes a 230 g canister and a frying pan
  • Pairs sharing a hot drink and a freeze-dried meal on three-season trips
  • Anyone who wants the pot support and canister stand in the box rather than as extras

Strengths

  • 1 litre pot that takes a 230 g canister inside (PaleoHikerMD)
  • Pot support lets any flat-bottom pan sit on the burner
  • Push-button igniter works every time (The Outdoor Gear Review); locking handle and heat-proof neoprene sleeve
  • Fire-Maple states 2.2 kW and a 1 min 42 s lab boil for 0.5 L

Weaknesses

  • Real boils were slower than the lab figure: The Outdoor Gear Review took 4 min 44 s for 0.5 L with the pot fitted, and over 5.5 min for about 0.5 L in a kettle on the pot support, in still air at about 13 °C
  • Abbie Barnes took about 6 min for 1 L on a cold, windy day
  • Heavy for one person at 630 g
  • Fire-Maple's own US FAQ says the X2 has no pressure regulator and suits three-season use, with boil times rising as the canister cools: not winter-ready
  • Boiling only, not simmering (PaleoHikerMD); the lid latch is fiddly
  • Fire-Maple states no fuel use per litre, so we cannot score fuel use
