Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 1/10How much it adds to your pack. 1: A real weak point.
Fire-Maple's UK page gives 738.2 g and its US page 762 g; we band the heavier, 762 g, in the 650 g and over band (738 g is the same band). Fellmandave weighed 675 g and From Shed To Summit 671 g for the pot, burner and lid before the pot stand: also over 650 g.
Fuel use
From maker's figures 9/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Fire-Maple's UK page gives 5.2 g of fuel for 0.5 L, doubled to 10.4 g per litre (scaled), just under the 11 g line.
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 9/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Fire-Maple's UK page gives 3 min 20 s for 1 litre (200 s) and 1 min 40 s for 0.5 L without the pot stand, in the under-210 s band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Wind performance*
Reviewers' average 7/10How well it keeps boiling in a breeze.
3 reviews on wind performance, e.g. "so that was just light breath which blew that out".
Reviewers disagree on this.
Simmer control*
Reviewers' average 7/10How low the flame turns down without going out, for real cooking.
3 reviews on simmer control, e.g. "Yeah, that's a gentle simmer, and of all the stoves I've been doing that with recently, that's the lowest, nice, even spread".
Reviewers disagree on this.
In short
Good for
- Cold-season and winter trips where a pressure-regulated burner is wanted in a one-pot system
- Two people sharing a 1.25 litre pot, or one person who cooks as well as boils
- Walkers who want a strainer lid and a pot stand for a frying pan in the same kit
Strengths
- Pressure regulator, which Fire-Maple says keeps the flow steady in cold and at altitude; it sells the system for winter camping
- Radiant burner: Fellmandave measured 0.5 L at 1 min 57 s, and 2 min 15 s in a side-by-side test against 2 min 51 s for his old Jetboil
- 1.25 litre pot with a strainer lid and a pot stand for a frying pan
- Wide, even simmer (Fellmandave) and quieter than a Jetboil (From Shed To Summit)
- Canister sits to one side in a remote-style layout, with a stable base (From Shed To Summit)
Weaknesses
- Heavy: 738 g by Fire-Maple's UK page, 762 g by its US page, 671-675 g weighed without the pot stand
- No piezo igniter, so carry a lighter (Fellmandave)
- Fellmandave used about 13 g of gas for a short test with a pre-light and flame demo around one 0.5 L boil, more than the 5.2 g Fire-Maple states
- The flame is invisible, so it is a little hard to tell when it is about to go out (Fellmandave)
- From Shed To Summit blew it out by breathing on it at low power
- Fire-Maple gives no temperature rating; we mark it winter-ready from its US FAQ, which answers 'Is it good for winter camping?' with 'Yes, it is the best choice' and credits its built-in pressure regulator (its UK page says only alpine and harsh conditions)
- Never use a gas stove inside a tent; Fellmandave's use as a tent heater was with vents open and a carbon monoxide alarm
