Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 10/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Fenix gives 1600 lumens on cool white High, tested to ANSI/PLATO FL1, and its runtime chart shows the 1600 lumens holding for about 3 minutes before it steps down to about 530 lumens until about 2 h 40 min. 1lumen's graph shows it stepping down sooner but still well past a minute: 1,590 lumens at 30 seconds, about 1,540 at 1 minute, above 800 lumens until about 1 minute 35 seconds, then 530 lumens from about 2 minutes. Held for more than 1 minute, so the 800+ band. The warm white light (800 lumens) steps down in the same way, to about 290 lumens by 10 minutes.

Runtime

From maker's figures 10/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Fenix gives 24 h on Low at 130 lumens (cool and warm white) and 12 h on Medium at 400 lumens: the 10 h+ band. Fenix's chart shows Low settling at about 110 lumens, still over 80 lumens, to 24 h. 1lumen measured 129-141 lumens steady on Low and 23 h 32 min (cool white) and 21 h 57 min (warm white) to the FL1 end point. High (1600 lumens) is 3 h and warm High (800 lumens) 6 h; Eco (5 lumens, 300 h) is under 80 lumens so it doesn't count.

Weight

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Fenix lists 140 g with the battery and headband (Fenixlight UK says 140 g including battery; 1lumen weighed 143 g, 93 g without the battery): the 110-149 g band.

In short

Good for

Strengths

  • 1600 lumens (FL1) and a 170 m beam by Fenix's figures
