Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 10/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Fenix gives 1200 lumens on Turbo, tested to ANSI/PLATO FL1 with the battery it ships with, and its chart shows 1200 lumens for the first few minutes, then about 430 lumens until about 3 h 20 min. 1lumen's graph shows it stepping down sooner but still well past a minute: 1,228 lumens at turn-on, about 1,150 at 1 minute, above 1,000 for about 2 minutes, above 800 until about 3 minutes 40 seconds and above 500 for about 7 minutes, then about 400 lumens. Held for more than 1 minute, so the 800+ band.

Runtime

From maker's figures 10/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Fenix gives 23 h 40 min on Medium at 130 lumens and 12 h on High at 400 lumens: the 10 h+ band. Fenix's chart shows High settling at about 150 lumens and Medium at about 100 lumens, both over 80 lumens, to the end. 1lumen measured 11 h 28 min on High to the FL1 end point. Turbo is 4 h by the table, and Low (5 lumens, 280 h) is under 80 lumens so it doesn't count.

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 4: A bit below average.

Fenix lists 125 g with the battery and headband (Fenixlight UK says 125 g including battery; Rob's Been Running gives 124 g, and 74 g without the battery): the 110-149 g band.

In short

Good for

  • Long night runs and hill days where weight on the head matters: 125 g with a 3400 mAh battery
  • Overnight events and trips that need 12 hours at 400 lumens
  • Anyone who wants a red light for camp and map reading

Strengths

  • 125 g with battery and headband
  • 12 hours at 400 lumens and 23 h 40 min at 130 lumens
  • 1200 lumens (FL1) with a 150 m beam
  • IP68: submersible to 2 m, with 2 m impact resistance
  • Wide perforated band with a click dial and built-in whistle
  • Red light and red flash; electronic lock-out; USB-C charging on the battery

Weaknesses

  • 1200 lumens holds for a few minutes, then falls to about 400 lumens (1lumen)
  • Only one beam, no separate flood
  • Press-and-hold to switch on and off, and a double click for red (1lumen)
  • No charging port on the lamp: the battery charges on its own USB-C port, and only button-top cells fit (1lumen)
  • Fenix gives the 4 h Turbo time in total, including step-downs
