Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 5/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Fenix gives 800 lumens on Turbo, but this torch's pages state no test standard, and its own runtime chart shows Turbo falling to about 420 lumens within the first few minutes. Fenix gives no figure for how long the 800 lumens holds, so it can't be shown to last 1 minute. The highest levels the chart shows holding well past a minute are about 420 lumens (Turbo after the drop) and 350 lumens (High): the 300–499 band. 1lumen measured 746 lumens at 30 seconds and 397 lumens at 10 minutes, which agrees.

Runtime

From maker's figures 9/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Fenix gives 10 hours at 130 lumens (cool white Medium and warm white High) on its page and chart: the 10+ h band, right on its edge. Fenixlight UK says Fenix's runtimes are timed down to 10% of starting output, and the chart shows the output easing down over the final hours. 1lumen measured 9 h 34 min at that level, which would be band 4. Turbo (800 lumens) lasts 3 h 20 min on the chart, and Low (5 lumens, 160 hours) is under 80 lumens so it doesn't count.

Weight

From maker's figures 5/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Fenix lists 103 g with the battery and headband, in the 90–109 g band.

In short

Good for

  • Night walks, trail running and wild camping where a light, adjustable head torch with a battery that takes AAAs is useful
  • Long trips: the battery pack comes out and three AAA batteries fit instead
  • Tasks that need colour rendering, using the warm white mode

Strengths

  • 103 g with the battery and headband
  • 10 hours at 130 lumens by Fenix's chart
  • Takes the rechargeable 1900 mAh pack or three AAA batteries as a backup
  • Separate cool white and warm white lights, with a red mode
  • Lock switch on the side and mode memory
  • IP66 dust and water protection and 1 m impact resistance
  • USB-C charging, with Low available while charging

Weaknesses

  • Turbo (800 lumens) falls to about 400 lumens within minutes
  • The cool and warm lights can't be switched on together
  • All-plastic body
  • The red light is weak and there is no red strobe, by one shop reviewer's account
  • IP66 is splash-proof, not submersible
