Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 10/10

How much it adds to your pack. 10: The best you can buy for this.

26 g, with the 2 g pouch listed separately (BRS figures as listed by Garage Grown Gear and Ultralight Outdoor Gear; Hikin' Jim gives 25 g; OutdoorGearLab weighed 39.7 g, which its text says includes the bag). All are under the 60 g line.

Packed size

From maker's figures 9/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Folded size, worked as a roll (length x diameter, a cylinder): Garage Grown Gear lists 4 x 4 x 5 cm stowed, so 3.14 x 2 x 2 x 5 = 63 cm3, about 0.063 L, the largest of the figures and the one used. OutdoorGearLab gives about 5.1 x 3.8 x 3.8 cm (0.058 L). Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 52 x 37 mm (0.056 L), though those numbers match Three Points of the Compass's measurement of the Fire-Maple FMS-300T, so it is not relied on. Every figure is under the 0.08 L line. There is no BRS page to read, so the size is shop-listed only.

Boil speed (still air)

Estimate from maker's specs: boil time figure 8/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 8: Clearly better than most.

Wind performance

From reviews 4/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 4: A bit below average.

Reviewers agree it copes badly with wind. OutdoorGearLab rates wind resistance 2.0 out of 10 (the burner blew out a few times and it boiled much slower): 2. CleverHiker boiled 1 litre in 4 min 45 s without wind, but with a small fan it had not boiled after 15 minutes (it adds that real gusts were no trouble): 1. Outdoor Adventures gave up after 10 minutes in a light wind, and fixes it by blocking the wind with a bag: 2. Hikin' Jim, in moderate wind, got 750 ml only to a low boil after about 10 minutes and called it abysmal in wind: 1. gideonstactical timed 0.5 litre in 3 min 17 s in still air and 5 min 34 s with a work fan on high at 0.9 m, 70% longer: 3 (the PocketRocket 2 was 63% longer). Trekcoeur put it in front of a fan at 1 m on three speeds: it held on the first two and blew out on the highest, while the PocketRocket 2 and a Forclaz stove held: 2. No fan speed was measured and none is the 3-6 km/h reference breeze. Average 1.8 out of 5, so 4 out of 10.

Reviewers disagree on this.

In short

Good for

  • Solo boil-in-the-bag meals and hot drinks on short, sheltered trips
  • A small backup stove that fits in a mug with a 100 g canister

Strengths

  • 26 g and about 0.06 L packed (4 x 4 x 5 cm as listed by Garage Grown Gear), among the lightest and smallest canister stoves (OutdoorGearLab weighed 39.7 g with the pouch)
  • Quick for small amounts: OutdoorGearLab timed 0.5 litre in 3 min 8 s, gideonstactical in 3 min 17 s and Outdoor Adventures 2 cups in 4 min 30 s
  • Small pots up to about 1 litre sit steadily in calm air, according to CleverHiker and Outdoor Adventures (the shop listing gives a 1 kg maximum load)

Weaknesses

  • Poor in wind: it blew out or boiled much slower in the OutdoorGearLab, CleverHiker, Trekcoeur, gideonstactical, Hikin' Jim and Outdoor Adventures tests, so it needs a sheltered spot
  • Wind pushes the flame onto one thin titanium pot support: Hikin' Jim bent one, and others report supports sagging on long burns
  • Small burner and short pot supports are only for small pots, and simmering is crude
  • Fuel use is mixed: OutdoorGearLab rates fuel efficiency 6.0 out of 10 and Outdoor Adventures says a PocketRocket is about three times more efficient, but gideonstactical's 10-minute burn used the same gas as a PocketRocket 2
  • The 2 min 58 s per litre quoted by Ultralight Outdoor Gear is not matched in tests (4 min 45 s per litre at CleverHiker)
  • No igniter or regulator, so carry a lighter; canister gas is poor in the cold
  • No BRS page could be read: the specs are as listed by shops, and the shops list different folded sizes
