Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much the pair adds to your hands and pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Black Diamond gives 534 g for the pair in the 120-135 cm size (508 g for 110-125 cm): the 450-549 g band. LFTO weighed a 125 cm pair at 522 g and UKC a 120-135 cm pair at 550 g (Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 271 g a pole, 542 g a pair); Black Diamond's figure is the one scored.
Packed size
From maker's figures 9/10Whether they fit inside or along a rucksack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Black Diamond gives a collapsed length of 40 cm in the 120-135 cm size (37 cm for 110-125 cm): under 45 cm. LFTO measured 36.5 cm and UKC 41 cm; OutdoorsMagic gives 36.5 cm in its text and 40 cm in its spec box.
In short
Good for
- Walkers who want poles that fold to 40 cm and fit inside a day pack or carry-on bag
- Rough ground, scrambling and long days where an aluminium pole's toughness matters more than weight
- Trekking-pole tarps and tents, with a lever lock that adjusts by 15 cm
Strengths
- Folds to 40 cm in the 120-135 cm size (37 cm in the 110-125 cm size), with a clip on each basket that holds the folded sections together (LFTO)
- Rock-solid with no joint play and a FlickLock that did not slip under a 90 kg walker and a 12 kg pack (LFTO)
- Cork-inlay grip and a foam extension; LFTO rates the grip among the best it has tested
- UL-validated recycled 7075 aluminium shafts that held up to a month of boulder fields (Better Trail) and a trek where a carbon pole snapped (OutdoorsMagic)
- Flex Tips with rubber tips, trekking baskets and snow baskets included
Weaknesses
- 534 g a pair, in the 450-549 g band; LFTO calls it middling for aluminium and UKC says it is heavier than some aluminium poles
- The foam grip extension is short (UKC, LFTO, OutdoorsMagic), and UKC found the FlickLock gets in the way of the hand when choking down (LFTO warns large hands or big gloves may notice it)
- Plastic FlickLock has no built-in tool for tension, so carry a small screwdriver or Allen key (Better Trail)
- The fold button is hard to press with thick gloves (OutdoorsMagic)
- Sold in three size bands, so buy the one for your height
