Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Brightness
From maker's figures 6/10How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 6: A bit better than average.
450 lumens at full power, from the ANSI FL-1 table in Black Diamond's instruction sheet: the 300–499 band. The sheet gives 2.6 hours at this level on the three AAA it is sold with.
Runtime
From maker's figures 6/10How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 6: A bit better than average.
Black Diamond's instruction sheet (linked from its product page) gives 5 hours on Medium (200 lumens) with the three AAA alkaline it is sold with, the longest it gives for a mode of 80 lumens or more: the 4–5.9 h band. High (450 lumens) lasts 2.6 hours. With the BD 1500 rechargeable battery (sold separately) the same modes give 8 hours and 3.4 hours. The product page shows only 200 hours, which is the 6-lumen Low mode.
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack and your head. 7: Better than most.
Black Diamond's product page lists 86 g and its instruction sheet 75 g as sold (42 g for the lamp plus 33 g for the three AAA). We show the heavier figure; both are in the 50–89 g band, so the score is the same either way.
In short
Good for
- Camp use and trail approaches where a spot plus flood lens and a red, green and blue light are useful
- Hikers who want to add the BD 1500 USB-C battery later and keep AAA as a back-up
- Wet UK trips: IPX7 takes 1 m of water for 30 minutes
Strengths
- 450 lumens (ANSI FL-1 figure in the instruction sheet) with spot and flood lenses and a red, green and blue light
- 5 hours at 200 lumens on the AAA it comes with, 8 hours with the BD 1500 rechargeable battery (Black Diamond's figures)
- IPX7: tested to 1 m for 30 minutes
- Dual fuel: three AAA, or the BD 1500 rechargeable battery (sold separately, charges in the lamp over USB-C)
- Digital lock, brightness memory and PowerTap for a quick switch to full power
- 3-year Black Diamond warranty
Weaknesses
- New for 2026: no independent review of this version yet, so comfort, beam and controls are estimates, not reviewed scores
- The rechargeable battery is not included
- Short at full power: 2.6 hours at 450 lumens on AAA (Black Diamond's figure)
- Some Black Diamond buyers find the new battery latch fiddly
