Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 5/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Maker's figure, 300 lumens on High with no test standard stated: the 300–499 band (maker's figure).

Runtime

From maker's figures 5/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

BioLite gives 4 hours on High (300 lumens), the 4–5.9 h band. The Low mode (1.5 lumens, 100 hours) is under 80 lumens, so it doesn't count. Live for the Outdoors lists 3.5 hours, the 2–3.9 h band; The Trek's tester got a bit over 4 hours.

Weight

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 8: Clearly better than most.

BioLite's product page lists 52 g and its Range guide page 50 g, both in the 50–89 g band. Reviewers weighed 51 g (Live for the Outdoors) and 55 g (The Great Outdoors).

In short

Good for

  • Lightweight backpacking and wild camping where every gram counts
  • Short night walks, camp chores and a back-up light in the pack
  • Wet-weather trips: IP67, so it survives rain and a dunk

Strengths

  • 52 g with the battery: Live for the Outdoors calls it one of the lightest full-featured head torches
  • Soft one-piece band with no bounce
  • IP67: submersible to 1 m for 30 minutes
  • Fast USB-C charging: 0–80% in 30 minutes, and 8 minutes adds an hour at full power
  • Single button with stepless dimming, brightness memory, strobe and a lock mode

Weaknesses

  • 4 hours at full power by BioLite's figure, and Live for the Outdoors lists 3.5 hours
  • No red light, which matters in a shared shelter
  • The beam is a single white LED with a modest 75 m reach
  • The 817 mAh battery is built in: no AAA fallback or swappable cell on a long trip
