Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
From maker's figures 5/10How cold a night you can sleep comfortably through. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Ultralight Outdoor Gear and Alpinetrek both show Big Agnes's ISO comfort 3 °C (limit -2 °C), which sits in the 0.1 to 5 °C band; The Great Outdoors quotes the same. The maker's figure, not re-tested.
Room inside
Estimate: only 1 review about room inside (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How much room to move, bend your knees and sleep on your side. Roomier is comfier. 8: Clearly better than most.
A mummy by default, but zip-open side panels add up to 10 in of girth at the shoulders, hips or feet, which reviewers say suits side sleepers and sprawlers.
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack. 7: Better than most.
Alpinetrek's copy of the Big Agnes spec table gives 932 g for the Regular (Ultralight Outdoor Gear 939 g), in the 700-999 g band. The Great Outdoors weighed the Small at 870 g with its stuff sack.
Packed size
From maker's figures 2/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 2: A weak point.
Ultralight Outdoor Gear quotes Big Agnes's 14 L stuff sack volume for the Regular (44 x 20 cm works out at about 13.8 L), in the 13 L+ band. Compressed to 23 x 23 cm it is about 9.5 L, which would be the 9-12.9 L band, so treat it as the top edge of its band; The Great Outdoors found it packed fairly small.
In short
Good for
- Side sleepers and restless sleepers who want extra room at the shoulders, hips or feet
- Spring to early autumn camps on nights that stay a few degrees above freezing
- Campers who keep sliding off a slippery mat: the pad sleeve and pillow pocket hold things in place
Strengths
- Zipped side panels expand the bag by up to 25 cm wherever you need room (shoulders, hips or feet)
- 932 g for a roomy bag, with 340 g of 650-fill water-repellent down
- Built-in pad sleeve (for rectangular mats about 51 to 76 cm wide) and a pillow pocket; The Great Outdoors did not slide off her mat
- Hood tightens with the toggle tucked under the draft collar, so you do not lie on it (The Great Outdoors)
Weaknesses
- Only a mild-weather bag: comfort 3 °C and limit -2 °C, and The Great Outdoors tested it only in a warm, dry spring
- Bulky: a 14 L stuff sack for the Regular, and the maker recommends a separate compression sack to shrink it
- Setting up the pad sleeve takes practice (The Great Outdoors), and the small double-ended zips snagged if moved too fast
- Horizontal baffles let some down drift to the sides, which has to be shaken back
- Only one independent review found, so damp performance, durability and a second opinion on comfort are missing
