Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 6/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 6: A bit better than average.
Big Agnes's trail weight of 1.70 kg sits in the 1.5–1.99 kg band (1.93 kg with stakes and stuff sack).
Rain protection
From maker's figures 3/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Fly 1,500 mm (from UK shop listings; Big Agnes's own page doesn't give the figure) is the 1,500–1,999 band, band 3 (5 out of 10), then one band lower because the 1,500 mm floor is under 2,000 mm.
Wind
Estimate: only 1 review about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 4/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 4: A bit below average.
Not enough evidence: only Switchback Travel says anything firm: it found the tall shape and broad sides limit stability in high wind, and the fly sags in moderate to heavy rain until the guylines are retightened.
Space
From maker's figures 6/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.
Big Agnes's 2.6 m² inner floor ÷ 2 people = 1.3 m² each, in the 1.15–1.34 band; the floor tapers from 132 cm at the head to 107 cm at the foot, and testers found it cramped for two.
Packed size
From maker's figures 6/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.
Packs to 47 cm long x 15 cm across: 3.1416 x 7.5 x 7.5 x 47 = 8,306 cm³, so 8.31 L, in the 7–9.9 L band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "Even on my first try, it was a cinch setting up the tent thanks to the color-coded pole ends and intuitive rainfly attachment.".
Condensation*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
2 reviews on condensation, e.g. "After a very humid night in Patagonia, the only sign of moisture was along the foot end of the tent".
In short
Good for
- Sheltered spring to autumn wild camps and trail trips where comfort matters more than the last gram
- Campers who want a fly made without intentionally added PFAS
Strengths
- 1.70 kg minimum weight for a freestanding two-door tent with two vestibules (0.84 m² each)
- Tough-feeling nylon ripstop (40D floor) that testers say holds up better than ultralight tents
- Colour-coded poles and a central hub make it quick to pitch; can be pitched fly-only with a footprint
- Full mesh ceiling and a roof vent keep condensation low in mild weather, per Overland Europe
- Budget-friendly for a freestanding tent from a major brand
Weaknesses
- Tapered floor (132 cm at the head, 107 cm at the foot) is cramped for two; Switchback calls it surprisingly small and best for one
- Tall shape and broad sides limit wind stability, and the fly sags in moderate to heavy rain until the guylines are retightened (Switchback)
- Needs guylines for a taut pitch; pitches inner first, which is poor in rain
- Fly and floor are only rated 1,500 mm (from UK shop listings), so use a footprint on wet ground
- Heavier and bulkier (8.3 L) than lighter freestanding tents
