Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Berghaus lists 0.580 kg without naming the size, which sits in the 470-649 g band. The size M weight isn't published, so M may be a little lighter.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 7/10How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 7: Better than most.
GORE-TEX with no mm figure published for this jacket, so the GORE-TEX rule gives 7 (an estimate: a 9 or 10 needs reviews). Berghaus says 'taped seams' in the feature list and, in its GORE-TEX panel on the same page, 'every seam is sealed', as it does on the Cornice III we scored the same way. We ignore the 28,000 mm Berghaus prints, the generic GORE-TEX figure.
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: 2-layer build with a hanging liner 3/10How much warmth the jacket itself adds. Most shells add little: wear a warm layer under them. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Estimate from maker's specs
In short
Good for
- Traditional hillwalking jacket for wet UK days
- Walkers who want to zip a compatible Berghaus InterActive fleece inside
- Low-level and everyday use where weight matters less
Strengths
- 2-layer GORE-TEX ePE with a 70D face
- Berghaus says every seam is sealed, with a GORE-TEX 'guaranteed waterproof' claim
- InterActive front zip joins a compatible Berghaus midlayer
- Peaked hood with single-cord adjustment, and adjustable hem and cuffs
- Two zipped hand pockets and a zipped chest pocket
- Berghaus's Repairhaus covers repairs
Weaknesses
- 580 g (Berghaus's figure) is heavy for a shell
- No pit zips
- No independent test found, so weather protection and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
- Fixed hood
