Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: fill type and jacket weight (no fill figures published) 8/10How warm it keeps you standing still at camp. 8: Clearly better than most.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 1/10How much it adds to your pack. 1: A real weak point.
Berghaus lists 0.980 kg (980 g), in the 800 g and over band. Its page gives no size, so this may not be the men's M weight; its shop data carries 1,000 g, a shipping weight we don't use. GO Outdoors, Blacks and Millets say 880 g for UK size L, which is in the same band.
In short
Good for
- Everyday and cold-weather use, and car or hut camping, where weight doesn't matter (Berghaus: warmth worn either way round)
- A warm layer at camp: Hydrodown 650 fill, with a fleece side that is soft against the body
- Not a pack-it-small carry: 980 g and no hood
Strengths
- Reversible: a ripstop woven face for weather and a shearling fleece face for comfort, so two jackets in one
- Two-way front zip adds venting; elasticated cuffs and an adjustable hem keep out draughts
- Three pockets: two zipped hand pockets and a chest pocket that doubles as an internal pocket when reversed
- Covered by Berghaus's Repairhaus repair service
Weaknesses
- 980 g, in the 800 g and over band, so a heavy carry
- No hood: a stand collar only
- Warmth, damp performance and durability aren't scored: no independent test of this jacket found yet
- No packed size, fill weight or fill power test method published by Berghaus
- Berghaus and the shops differ on the weight (980 g and 880 g in UK size L) and on the shell fabric
