Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 1/10How much they add to your pack. 1: A real weak point.
Berghaus and Tiso list 546 g (Tiso names size UK M), in the 470 g and over band, band 1 (1 out of 10). UKHillwalking gives 700 g for the men's size M, also band 1. The score doesn't change either way.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 7/10How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 7: Better than most.
GORE-TEX Pro with no mm figure we can use, so the GORE-TEX rule gives 7 (an estimate: a 9 or 10 needs reviews). Berghaus's GORE-TEX panel on the product page says 'Every seam is sealed', which meets the seam condition. Berghaus's page (and Tiso's and Sportsshoes's copy of it) also prints 28,000 mm; that is the generic GORE-TEX figure, which we ignore, so the hydrostatic head field stays empty.
In short
Good for
- Winter mountaineering, alpine routes and ski touring where the trousers stay on all day
- Winter hill walking in foul weather, if you accept the extra weight (UKHillwalking calls it a little over-spec)
- Wearing over ski boots, crampons or big boots: fully separating side zips and a flared lower leg
Strengths
- 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro ePE with every seam sealed (Berghaus), PFAS-free
- Fully separating side zips, so they go on and off over any boot
- Articulated knees and a diamond gusset for high steps (UKHillwalking: very good freedom of movement)
- Two thigh pockets with water-resistant zips that sit clear of a harness
- Internal gaiters with a boot loop, stud cinching at the lower legs and kicker patches at the inner hem
- Brace attachment points; breathability 14 RET (Berghaus)
- Free repairs through Berghaus's Repairhaus service
Weaknesses
- 546 g (Berghaus and Tiso, size M) puts weight in the lowest band; UKHillwalking weighed 700 g
- UKHillwalking: the lower leg is very flared, the waist doesn't tighten enough without a harness and the gaiter could hug boots better
- UKHillwalking: the 70D face is a little less abrasion-resistant than the 80D used for hard Scottish winter climbing
- Only 1 independent test, so fit and durability aren't scored
