Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 1/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 1: A real weak point.
Listed weight is 3.05 kg (no separate trail weight is published), in the 2.7 kg+ band.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 7/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 7: Better than most.
Flysheet is 5,000 mm HH, in the 3,000 mm+ band (the top band), then one band lower because the groundsheet's rating isn't published (it is only described as a waterproof tub-style floor).
Wind
From reviews 8/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 8: Clearly better than most.
Three independent sources, each 4 out of 5, so 8 out of 10. Jamie Outdoors says it stood up really well against wind and rain overnight on a windy hill, even when the wind changed direction. Tors and Mors pitched on the windy side of a tor and found it remarkably good, still up after the wind picked up. Amateur Explorer calls the low strong shape a good choice in high winds and rarely needs guylines (his own pegging with the wind was the mistake).
Space
Estimate from maker's specs: berths and tent shape (no floor area published) 5/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Packed size
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.
Listed pack size is 50 x 16 x 16 cm: 3.1416 x 8 x 8 x 50 = 10,053 cm³, so 10.05 L, in the 10–14.9 L band (just over the line).
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "took me about 5 6 minutes which I was really impressed with it's a really easy setup".
Condensation*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
2 reviews on condensation, e.g. "a lot of condensation didn't get into the inner tent but obviously the outside of the tent and the inside of the actual tent the fly was very wet".
Reviewers disagree on this.
In short
Good for
- Short trips where 3 kg split between two (1.5 kg each) is acceptable
Strengths
- 5,000 mm HH polyester ripstop flysheet
- Semi-geodesic pole layout with mesh pole sleeves and tension straps (Millets' description)
- Tub-style groundsheet and an included repair kit
- Pitch time quoted at 7 minutes; reviewers took 5 to 7 minutes, fly first
Weaknesses
- Wind and pitching score 8 from independent reviews; durability has only one long-use source (Amateur Explorer, 40 to 50 nights) so it is an estimate, not a reviewed score
- 3.05 kg is heavy for a 2-person wild camping tent (score 1 out of 10)
- Groundsheet waterproof rating isn't published, so rain loses a point
- One door; one UK roundup says it narrows towards the foot end, so sleep with heads at the door
- Berghaus calls it a tent for all seasons but publishes no season rating, so we list it as 3-season
- Berghaus tents are sold by Millets and its sister shops, so there is no brand spec sheet to cross-check
