Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.
Cotswold lists 540 g without naming the size, in the 470-649 g band. The women's jacket on Cotswold's site lists 480 g, so 540 g is a plausible men's figure and not a shipping weight.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 5/10How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Ayacucho's page (Cotswold, Ayacucho's own shop) disagrees with itself: its water-column field says 15,000 mm, but its membrane line gives 10,000 mm for Setting Sun and 15,000 mm for Black and Dragon Fire, and it doesn't say which rating the Jungle Green, Moonlight Blue and newer Black jackets in stock carry (its "Black" is listed twice, so the in-stock Black can't be tied to the 15k figure). We band the lower figure, 10,000 mm (band 3). Ayacucho lists "Fully taped seams", so nothing caps it. Would be 4 at 15,000 mm. The second figure in each pair on its membrane line (10k / 10k TPU) is unexplained and may be breathability.
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: heavy 3-layer shell 3/10How much warmth the jacket itself adds. Most shells add little: wear a warm layer under them. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
