Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much it adds to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Arc'teryx's 460 g (the page doesn't name the size; GearLab weighed a men's M at 454 g) sits in the 370-469 g band.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 7/10How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 7: Better than most.
GORE-TEX PRO with no mm figure published by Arc'teryx, so the GORE-TEX rule gives 7 (an estimate: a 9 or 10 needs reviews). Seams are fully taped (GearLab, Switchback Travel); BetterTrail calls them adequately taped. We ignore the 28,000 mm some shops print.
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: heavy 3-layer shell 3/10How much warmth the jacket itself adds. Most shells add little: wear a warm layer under them. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Estimate from maker's specs
In short
Good for
- Year-round hillwalking, scrambling and winter walking in a premium 3-layer shell
- Walkers who want a helmet-compatible hood and pit zips for a day on a ridge
- One jacket for rain, snow and wind from 3-season to winter use
Strengths
- GORE-TEX PRO shell with fully taped seams, 460 g for the men's M
- Helmet-compatible DropHood with a tall collar that keeps rain and snow off the face; GearLab scores weather protection 9.3 out of 10
- 100D reinforced yoke, arms and hood against rucksack-strap wear; no failures reported
- Long pit zips and glove-friendly Velcro cuffs
- Women's version exists (Beta AR Women's)
Weaknesses
- No two-way front zip, which Switchback Travel would have liked for venting (OutdoorGearLab lists it as missing)
- Venting is only average for the class, and reviewers got warm on sunny climbs (GearLab, BetterTrail)
- Hood peak droops over the eyes however it is adjusted (BetterTrail)
- Stiff, crinkly fabric and a very stiff collar (BetterTrail)
