Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 10/10

How cold a night you can sleep comfortably through. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Alpkit's EN 13537 comfort figure is -10.5 °C (limit -18.1 °C), colder than -5 °C. The maker's figure, not re-tested; Alpkit's own sleep limit is -12 °C. road.cc's coldest night was -4 °C and it was warm.

Room inside

Estimate: only 1 review about room inside (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10

How much room to move, bend your knees and sleep on your side. Roomier is comfier. 6: A bit better than average.

The one review notes a reasonably slim leg area but nothing about room to roll over, so this is a normal-fit score.

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

How much it adds to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.

1,085 g for the Regular (stuff sack another 30 g) sits in the 1,000–1,299 g band. road.cc listed an earlier 1,057 g.

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

Alpkit's table says '⌀30 x 21 cm' for the Regular. Read as 30 cm long x 21 cm across, which matches road.cc's own measurement of about 30 x 20 cm in the compression sack, it is 3.1416 x 10.5 x 10.5 x 30 = 10,391 cm³, so 10.4 L, in the 9–12.9 L band. If 30 cm were the diameter it would be 14.8 L (the 1 band); Alpkit's text also quotes 21 x 18 cm, about 6.2 L, with the second strap pulled tight.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Comfort to sleep in*

Estimate: only 1 review about comfort to sleep in (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How comfy the shape, hood and fabric feel; not the temperature rating.

1 review on comfort to sleep in, e.g. "One feature I really like is the neck baffle with its sculpted shape".

In short

Good for

  • Winter and cold shoulder-season trips in the UK with a high R-value mat
  • Bikepacking or backpacking where a winter bag has to pack small: about 10 L
  • Too warm for summer: road.cc found it fine up to 7 °C without feeling hot, so look at the Pipedream 400 for milder trips

Strengths

  • EN 13537 comfort figure of -10.5 °C at 1,085 g, which is light for a winter bag
  • 750 fill power RDS-certified duck down (600 g fill) with a PFC-free hydrophobic treatment
  • The road.cc review found the down held its loft when the bag got damp, and the slim leg area kept feet warm
  • Sculpted neck baffle, full-length two-way zip and a hood cord
  • 3-year Alpine Bond guarantee

Weaknesses

  • Only two lengths and no short size; a reader comment on UKC says the Regular is snug at 1.78 m
  • About 10 L packed, so not as small as the 400
  • Maker's pack-size figures disagree with each other (see packed size note), so the score is a best reading
  • Only one independent test found (road.cc, 2021, one winter), so damp performance, comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
