Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 5/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Alpkit lists fly 750 g + inner 670 g + poles 530 g = 1,950 g, in the 1.5–1.99 kg band. Its headline weight is 2,040 g with the 10 pegs, without the optional 250 g footprint.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 7/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 7: Better than most.

Fly 2,000 mm is in the 2,000–2,999 band, band 4 (7 out of 10); floor 3,000 mm so no deduction.

Wind

Estimate: only 1 review about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 6: A bit better than average.

ADVNTR stayed dry in howling wind, although the tent was noisy. The earlier lighter Jaran reviews are excluded.

Space

Estimate from maker's specs: berths and tent shape (no floor area published) 5/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Estimate from maker's specs

Packed size

From maker's figures 6/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.

Packs to 42 cm long x 15 cm across: 3.1416 x 7.5 x 7.5 x 42 = 7,422 cm³, so 7.4 L, in the 7–9.9 L band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Reviewers' average 7/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

4 reviews on pitching, e.g. "fairly straightforward to put up if you pay attention to the colour coded tabs, but it is still more fiddly than some designs".

In short

Good for

  • Two people who want two doors and two porches in a tent under 2 kg
  • Summer and mild spring or autumn backpacking and bikepacking in sheltered spots
  • Sharing a tent with someone who isn't your partner: each person has a door and a porch

Strengths

  • Two doors and two porches (126 x 67 cm each): a pack and boots fit in each
  • Roomy for the weight, with a floor wide enough for two mats side by side
  • Freestanding on one hubbed pole; can be pitched fly and footprint only for a lighter setup
  • Mesh panels and fly vents give plenty of airflow in warm weather
  • 40D fly and floor, with a 3,000 mm bathtub floor
  • Comes with 10 pegs; 3-year Alpine Bond

Weaknesses

  • ADVNTR found it pretty noisy in howling wind; no reviewer has tested it in a storm on exposed ground
  • Pitches inner first, so awkward in rain; James Sturt-Schmidt gets round it by pitching the outer first and clipping the inner in afterwards, or by using the footprint
  • Thin floor: ADVNTR, James Sturt-Schmidt and Rick's Bike Flips all use or recommend the footprint (sold separately, 250 g)
  • Pitched height is 99 cm (Alpkit), so there is little room to sit up
  • Fly rating is 2,000 mm, lower than the 3,000 mm of the Ordos 2
  • On pre-order at Alpkit when we checked, with despatch from 28 October
