Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: fill type and bag weight (no temperature rating published) 1/10How cold a night you can sleep comfortably through. 1: A real weak point.
Estimate from maker's specs
Room inside
Estimate: only 1 review about room inside (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10How much room to move, bend your knees and sleep on your side. Roomier is comfier. 6: A bit better than average.
It is a quilt, so there is no tube to feel cramped in. The one review calls it not the largest and a little short for very tall sleepers.
Weight
From maker's figures 10/10How much it adds to your pack. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Alpkit lists 450 g for the Regular (30 g stuff bag extra), under the 700 g band.
Packed size
From maker's figures 2/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 2: A weak point.
Alpkit gives the pack size as 30 cm across x 21 cm long, so it is a stuff sack: 3.1416 x 15 x 15 x 21 = 14,844 cm3, 14.8 L, in the 13 L+ band. Alpkit's PipeDream 600 page uses the same "⌀30 x 21 cm" wording and road.cc measured that bag as 30 cm long and about 21 cm across, so the true order may be the other way round (10.4 L, the 9–12.9 L band, so the 2 band); we keep the diameter-first reading the ⌀ sign states.
In short
Good for
- Summer and warm-night wild camps in the UK, used as a quilt or a duvet-style bag
- Adding roughly one season of warmth on top of a lighter bag (Outdoors Magic, of the earlier version), or as a hammock underquilt
Strengths
- Only 450 g for a down quilt, with 200 g of 750 fill power goose down
- The down is treated to resist damp and is RDS certified, with a PFAS-free outer finish
- Corner poppers let you close it into a bag shape or join it to a second quilt, and drawcords close both ends
- Packs into its own stuff bag, supplied in the box
Weaknesses
- No hood, zip or foot box, and Alpkit gives no temperature rating, so it suits summer or as an add-on, not as a stand-alone cold-weather bag
- Packs to about 14.8 L (30 cm across x 21 cm long), bulky for 200 g of down
- Independent reviews we found cover earlier versions (2016 to 2021): none test today's quilt, so Damp, Comfort and Durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
- Alpkit sells one regular size only; a reviewer of the earlier version found it short at the feet for tall sleepers
