Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 8/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 8: Clearly better than most.

Maker's figure, 700 lumens in the Boost mode with no test standard stated: the 500–799 band (maker's figure), which is the most a figure without a test standard can score. Boost lasts 5 minutes, then drops to 350 lumens (High mode, 7 hours); the 700-lumen figure is held for more than 1 minute, so it counts. Without Boost the torch would band at 350 lumens, in the 300–499 band.

Runtime

From maker's figures 8/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 8: Clearly better than most.

The longest mode of 80 lumens or more is the 175-lumen Mid mode at 9 hours (maker's figure), in the 6–9.9 h band. The 350-lumen High mode runs 7 hours and the 70-lumen Low mode 12 hours, which is under 80 lumens so it doesn't count. Alpkit's launch post says up to 96 hours on lower settings; the product page gives 47 hours at most (the 2-lumen Blue mode), so the product page's figures are used.

Weight

From maker's figures 5/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Alpkit lists 104 g including the strap, in the 90–109 g band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Comfort*

Estimate: only 1 review about comfort (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How comfy and steady it sits on your head.

1 review on comfort, e.g. "Feels comfortable on my head for long durations.".

Ease of use*

Estimate: only 1 review about ease of use (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How easy the buttons, modes and lock are, with gloves too.

1 review on ease of use, e.g. "On/Off sensor is great when wearing gloves and easier than using the buttons".

In short

Good for

  • Wild camping and hill walking where you want a bright 350-lumen main mode and a 9-hour mid mode
  • Camp tasks that need red, green or blue light

Strengths

  • 700 lumens for 5 minutes, then 350 lumens for 7 hours (maker's figures)
  • 175 lumens for 9 hours on the built-in 2200 mAh battery (maker's figure)
  • IPX6: protected against powerful water jets
  • Wave sensor, red, green and blue modes, and a glow-in-the-dark faceplate
  • USB-C charging and a 3-year Alpine Bond guarantee

Weaknesses

  • No independent review found, so comfort and beam are estimates, not reviewed scores
  • The 700-lumen Boost lasts 5 minutes; the sustained top mode is 350 lumens
  • The 2200 mAh battery is built in and can't be swapped for disposable batteries
  • 104 g, in the middle of the weight bands
  • Beam distance is 35 m on High, short for night navigation on open ground
