Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 5/10

How much the pair adds to your hands and pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Alpkit gives 265 g for the pole on its twin and single pages (so it is per pole), without the 10 g basket and 8 g tip protector that come with it. Doubled to 530 g for the pair: the 450-549 g band. With the baskets and tip protectors fitted the pair is about 566 g.

Packed size

From maker's figures 6/10

Whether they fit inside or along a rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.

Alpkit gives a packed length of 55 cm (3 sections): the 55-64.9 cm band, right on the line. Alpkit's text gives the adjustable range as 63-130 cm but its spec table gives a usable minimum of 67 cm; we list 67 cm, and the range is not scored.

In short

Good for

  • Day walks and long descents where a sprung handle takes some of the jolt off wrists and knees
  • Walkers who want a lever lock they can work with gloves on

Strengths

  • Anti-shock spring in the handle, with a twist lock-out for a rigid pole (Alpkit)
  • 265 g a pole, 530 g a pair (Alpkit)
  • Snap-lock lever adjustment that works with gloved hands, 67-130 cm
  • Duralumin alloy 3-section shaft with a tungsten tip
  • Trekking baskets and a rubber tip protector included, with a 3-year Alpine Bond guarantee

Weaknesses

  • 530 g a pair is mid-weight, and the sprung handle adds to it
  • Packs to 55 cm, so it rides outside a small pack
  • Alpkit's page gives the shortest length as 63 cm in its text and 67 cm in its spec table; we use 67 cm
  • Lock, grip and durability scores are blank: no independent review found
