Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Waterproof build
From maker's figures 6/10How well its build keeps water out, from the published seams, closure and submersion claim. 6: A bit better than average.
Alpkit says the Airlok has taped seams and a roll-top closure (3 full turns), and calls it fully watertight. It makes no submersion claim: the 3 band (taped seams and a roll-top).
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 10/10How much it adds to your pack for the space it protects. 10: The best you can buy for this.
56 g for 24 L is 2.3 g/L, under 4.0 g/L: the 5 band (Alpkit's published figure for the 24 L size, on its product page). Alpkit's shop data lists 60 to 100 g by colour, which isn't a published spec; at 100 g it would be 4.2 g/L, band 4.
In short
Good for
- A very light liner for a day pack, or a sack for a bulky 3-season sleeping bag inside a rucksack (Alpkit's suggested uses for the 24 L)
- Keeping kit dry in rain inside a pack or bike bag
- Colour-coded by size, so kit is quicker to find
- Not for river crossings or anything that may go under water
Strengths
- 56 g for 24 L (2.3 g/L)
- Taped seams and a roll-top closure
- Strap on the base for pulling it out of a full pack
- 3-year Alpine Bond (repair, replace or refund)
Weaknesses
- No submersion claim, so not for anything that may go under water
- 30D fabric: Alpkit sells the heavier Airlok Xtra (320D) for tougher use
- Alpkit says to dry it fully before storing, because water can break down the PU coating over time
- No independent test of this version, so durability and ease are estimates, not reviewed scores
